Under 9s Round-up :

July 3rd 2011

A Division

Sparsholt bounced back from last week’s first defeat of the season, as only three fixtures were carried out in each division as Harry Hunt reports. Travelling to Amport, Sparsholt managed 289 runs all out; Tom Carr-Smith and Ed Hall both took two scalps to their name for the home side. In return, Amport could only manage a lowly 224 for 10, Sparsholt’s Zach Corner took two wickets, as too did team-mate Theo McLean, who saw no runs hit against his name. This fairly one sided game was however an encapsulating watch, there were 11 run outs, split 6-5 to Amport. Elsewhere, St Cross A continued to perform; they too like rivals Sparsholt have lost just once this season. Hosting Easton and Martyr Worthy, they made 357 with Joe Mills (26) and Sam Kendall (22) helping them on their way. The remaining fixture saw Hursley Park edge a tight match at Compton and Chandlers Ford. Alex Topley’s 23 not out made sure Hursley’s 264 was too much for the hosts 250 all out.

B Division

Otterbourne came out on top in the most thrilling fixture for the B division, an impressive 337 for 5 out classed Andover B’s 287-5. Otterbourne’s Max Swanborough (31 runs and 2 wickets) plus Jacob Dann (23 runs and 3 wickets) have special mentions for their stand-out performances. Twyford were also victorious over near neighbours St Cross B, 275 saw off a return of 240. So too were Trojans B, Andover C’s 245 could not match the hosts 305 runs.

June 26th 2011

A Division

Trojans A are the first team in the under 9’s A Division to overcome formerly unbeaten Sparsholt, with an impressive 100 run victory writes Harry Hunt. With under 9 teams starting with 200 runs on the board, Trojans 314 for 2 was far superior to Sparsholt’s 214-14. Finlay Whale, Luca Astles and Harry Fay all took three scalps to their name and a special mention to their wicket-keeper Michael Hill, who impressed with three catches and two stumping’s. Elsewhere, St Cross A recorded their 4th win on the bounce as Alistair Howman helped them on their way with his 26 run stand. There was also a victory for Andover A, and despite Hedge End’s Elliot Colyer taking a five wicket haul, Andover’s 225-10 overcame the visitors 216 for 9. Easton and Martyr Worthy were also successful, they lost no wickets on their way to 294 as Compton and Chandlers Ford never got started finishing with 218. In the final fixture of the weekend, Amport were victorious as they travelled to Hursley Park.

B Division

Several fixtures in the B Division fell short to cancellations and left just two completed matches. Trojans B and Trojans C were both too much for Twyford and Otterbourne respectively.

Sparsholt kicked off their season with the most impressive result of the first weekend. Winning by 405 to Tichbourne Park’s 220, they started as they will mean to go on in the first game of the summer schedule.  (All Under 9s innings start with 200 runs on the board!).  Three Sparsholt batters were top performers, with Zach Corner (22), Joe Sutton-Welch (21) and Rory Penrose (20) firing Sparsholt to their first win.

Other results saw Trojans A beat Compton and Chandlers Ford by 294-214 with great credit to Trojans’ Henry Rowden for his two wickets. Easton and Martyr Worthy just narrowly beat Hursley Park by 264-261.

In another exciting fixture, Sparsholt clinched a second resounding victory, this time at the expense of Easton and Martyr Worthy. The 315-215 win saw Theo McLean capture a three wicket haul, and Zach Corner put in another strong performance with 26, one wicket and a stumping.

After St Cross A and Hedge End A were kept waiting on the first weekend of the season, they might have been very determined to win.  However, that seemed like an unwelcome delay because they both suffered defeats, to Trojans A and Fair Oak A respectively.  Trojans Michael Hill hit 19, took 2 catches and a stumping, as the Southampton team went on their way to a narrow 274-269 victory over St Cross U9A.  Hedge End’s Ben Smith hit 17 but Fair Oak were the 284-272 winners.

In their fixture against Compton and Chandlers Ford, Amport’s Will Moon made 23 to help his side to a comfortable 301-267 victory.

For the Under 9Bs, it was a very different story. Only one match made it to the wicket on the first weekend, with four fixtures being cancelled. In the match that did take place, IBM Hursley narrowly beat Ropley by 288-271 at the Hursley ground.

In other fixtures, Trojans B made 284 as Otterbourne (240) missed out.  Trojans’ Kiran Sahota made an attacking 26 on their way to victory. There were also wins for Andover B and Trojans C as they beat Twyford (Andover) and Ropley (Trojans).

Sparsholt Under 9s continued their impressive start to the season in the A division as they travelled to Hursley Park and returned victorious.  The visitors, who had Rory Penrose to thank for a brilliant knock of 25, set the hosts a target of 310, after Sparsholt had made 309 whilst losing just three wickets.  (All under 9s teams start with 200 runs).  Hursley could only manage 243 for 7 in their innings and will look to improve on their showing when they travel to play Andover A in their next match.

Elsewhere, St Cross A notched their first win of the season, winning 303-227 at home to Amport.   Hedge End A top scored for the weekend with a total of 340 for 4 at Tichbourne Park who replied with just 241.   Finally in the A division, Easton and Martyr Worthy lost just one wicket on their way to 293 as Andover could only manage 243 in return.

The Under 9s B Division saw just three fixtures on the recent Bank Holiday weekend.  The pick of those came at Otterbourne where a tight match with St Cross B was separated by just 11 runs, with Otterbourne narrowly missing out on the 277 set by the visitors.  Hedge End B were again top scorers in this division showing that the Southampton club are firing on all batting cylinders -- their 319-1 was too much for Twyford Under 9s who hit 270 for 5 wickets.   IBM Hursley also recorded well deserved victory as they travelled to play Trojans C.  316 for 3 was enough to overcome the hosts total of 264.

Under 13 Leagues

Under 13A League

A CRUSHING bowling performance was the difference in an otherwise close match as Trojans hosted Fair Oak Under 13s.    The home side were chasing 113 to win after George Horton (31) and Connor Jack (24) put Fair Oak in control.   But no one foresaw the brilliant bowling of Harry Salmon and Henry Phillips as they tore into Trojans right from the off.  Henry Phillips snatched four stumpings while Salmon took 4-7 in 3 overs.

The victory followed defeat in the Oak’s previous fixture, where despite Harry Boby’s efforts, Fair Oak lost by 34 runs to St Cross.  In reply to 136-7, Fair Oak reached 102 from their 20 overs with Alex Chessell top scoring with 33 not out.  Fair Oak had started so well, with Boby taking 4-22 in 4 overs.

Elsewhere, on the opening day of the season, Hursley Park U13s shocked St Cross B by winning by ten wickets. The Cross had reached 115-6, and expected it was enough.  But a brilliant batting performance by Hursley Park ended in victory as their top bats saw them home.

The plaudits for quickest win went to Andover, who grabbed maximum points (16) with a brilliant performance away to Compton & Chandlers Ford.  Andover  (71-3) won by 7 wickets after the best bowling in all three divisions had restricted CCF to just 69-9 in their 20 overs.

Sparsholt A put in a sparkling performance as they defeated the St Cross B side by eight wickets. Sparsholt restricted the visitors to 78-6 in their 20 overs and then with minimal fuss reached their target for the loss of just two wickets.

Under 13B1 League

The Under 13 B1 season has been blighted with cancellations, but plenty of quality cricket has been on offer.   Dean Griffin was the top run scorer (32*) as Easton & Martyr Worthy made 109-6 in their U13 match against Longparish.  But it wasn’t enough as George Bull made 30* and the visitors won by six wickets after reaching 110-4 in just 15.4 overs. Longparish head the league (on average points), after their match against Bishops Waltham was postponed.

After two victories, Hedge End U13s are very confident of a good season!  They beat local rivals Fair Oak B by 10 wickets and then gave Easton & Martyr Worthy a tough time, beating them by 6 wickets.

In the Fair Oak match, Hedge End youngster Dan Ayling scored 20*, whilst his namesake Luke Ayling clinched a run out with a direct throw for the Fair Oak fielders.  Fair Oak managed just 75-4 and Hedge End got 76 without loss.   In the Easton MW match, the home team struggled to 32 all out on a difficult pitch, and Hedge End lost 4 wickets in reaching their target.

Under 13B2 League

IF EARLY season form is anything to go by, Tichborne Park have every reason to be hopeful after two victories in their first two games.  They defeated Fair Oak C by five wickets with Thomas Essex on 17* and Aidan Blackman (15) as the home side made 74-5 in their 20 overs.

Chasing just 75 to win, Fair Oak C had hoped to claim the points with excellent bowling from Nathan Bristow (3-14), Thomas Walton (2-13) and Thomas Essex (1-13).

St Cross U13Cs entertained Tichborne Park but lost to the visitors by 7 wickets.  St Cross scored a competitive 111 – 9, but Tichborne knocked off the runs for just 3 wickets, to give them maximum points from the match and put them joint top of the table.

Ellie Musson for Otterbourne Bs was the star of the day as she brilliantly dismantled the Sparsholt B batting with a return of 4 for 8 from 4 overs.   In a crushing display, in which the 13-year old was the only female player, she led the bowling, aided by Jamie Oliver and Alex Ind as Sparsholt were restricted to 85-9 in reply to the home team. Otterbourne’s Zack Miles (27) and Aiden Collins (16*) helped build the home team’s total, while Sparsholt’s A Marles, with a superb 4-9 and B Coulson (20) did a good job for the visitors.

Twyford U13s entertained an Otterbourne B side and beat them by six wickets.  Strong batting from the home side (101-4) overhauled the visitors’ total of 99-8.   Twyford’s performers were W Bryan with 30*, J Fisher (18 and three stumpings!) and W Rowe (17), while W Rowe (4-10) and H Phillips (2-23) did well with the ball.  Otterbourne’s Zack Miles (33*) and Alex Ind (19) scored their runs, and Jamie Driver and Zack Miles got a wicket apiece.

Twyford had a competitive match against Ropley U13s who eventually prevailed to win by 20 runs. Will Stennett (30*) and Theo Hughes (30*) built an unbeaten opening partnership of 60 whilst Ben Kelson scored a valuable 26.  In reply, Twyford’s top batter was Jimmy Fisher (25*) with Will Bryan scored 14, but Ropley’s target proved too much for them.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 13 Leagues

ONCE again the weather played foul to a lot of games

in the under 13 league calendar with only a handful of matches played.

The Marquis Motorhomes

Under 13A League

AN OUTSTANDING bowling display from St Cross A saw them overcome their B team counterparts, to cement their position at the top of the league.   Tom Fay capped a brilliant all round performance with 25 not out as the away side posted a huge total of 135-9 from their 20 overs. Rafferty Tellett took 3-19 in his four overs for St Cross B but they were soon swept away by the visitors.

James Thompson achieved 4-9 in just three overs, with bowling partners Fay and Jonnie Wahid getting 3-15 in three overs as St Cross B were bowled out for just 83.   The win leaves St Cross A firmly on top of the division with five wins out of five and at this stage of the season they look very strong candidates to win the league.

In another high scoring affair Southampton Community’s dire season continued as they slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat at home to Andover A. The visitors were put in to bat first and posted a score of 138-4 with Nikko Hunt top scoring with 31not out. Harry Williams 26 and Ben Cox 23 not out helped Andover post a competitive score.

Southampton Community never got close with Ben Cox being the thorn in their side as his 3-5 proved decisive as the home side finished on 98-9. The win puts Andover A in 3rd place in the league.

Thomas Foster’s 4-8 helped Sparsholt A overcome Trojans A in a match which saw a stunning catch from Ben Cawsten.  Cawsten’s catch and some impressive bowling from Foster put paid to any hopes of a victory for Trojans A as they lost by six wickets.

In fact, Foster also managed 19 not out in a particularly impressive performance with Stuart Veal also posting the same score.   The defeat leaves the visitors 8th in the league and without a win.  However, special mention has to go to Jack Mellett whose 1-1 in just two overs proves he did everything he could to restrict Sparsholt A.

The Marquis Motorhomes   Under 13B1 League

Connor Potter and Ben Hughes both starred as Fair Oak B defeated Amport A in the only match played during the weekend.  Potter’s 21not out and Hughes 20 enabled the home side to post 109-3 with Ben Black’s bowling figures of 2-17 for Amport A ensuring the victory target remained low.

However, Amport  fell just short of their target, after Lewis Passmore’s 2-17 for Fair Oak B proving just enough.  The win puts Fair Oak B 5th in the league, with their first victory of the season.

The Marquis Motorhomes   Under 13B2 League

Ollie Cook was the star performer for St Cross C but ended up on the losing side in one of the most exciting games of the league season so far. Put into bat first against Twyford, the visitors posted a score of 78-6 with Cook top scoring on 33not out.  Will Rowe 1-4 and Wyatt Brennan 1-3 ensured that the victory target for the home side was just 79.

Twyford reached their target with just three overs to spare with Rowe getting 32not out but Cook’s 2-1 and Joe Winter’s 2-17 ensured it was a nervy finale.  The win moves Twyford up to second place in the division.

Otterbourne remained in fourth place after a ten wicket victory over Wherwell, who remain bottom of the league. Wherwell were reduced to just 65-8 in their 20 overs and Otterbourne didn’t hang about, and reached their victory target to finish on 69-0 after just 6.3 overs.

Elsewhere Sparsholt B overcome Trojans B to win by 36 runs after the away side hit 98-4 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply Trojans B could only manage 62-8.

As the league enters its final few weeks, the top four teams are all separated by just six points, and whatever happens between now and the end, there is sure to be an exciting finale.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15 Leagues

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15A League

ONE of the most exciting matches of the junior cricket season so far saw Andover overcome Trojans in an early season game.   For Andover, the two Max’s made the difference as both Souter and Romer Lee ended on unbeaten 30* as the home side set Trojans 94 to win.

Trojans were quietly confident of chasing down that target, but some impressive bowling from Souter and Hamish Morton put paid to that. Indeed Morton tore through the batting line up to finish with a three wickets haul.  Anish Joffi (30*) and Louise Hoghton 14, top scored for the visitors.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15B1 League

Matthew Haworth’s unbeaten 38 saw Compton and Chandlers Ford edge past visitors Otterbourne in a very close game.  Batting first, Compton frustrated the away side’s bowling attack and were largely successful as they posted a reasonable score of 94 all out. The only problem for Otterbourne was the eye-catching bowling of Eddie Culpitt, as captured three wickets in as many overs for a miserly eight runs.   However Compton’s own bowling line-up tore into Otterbourne, and with Calvin Meyer, Jay Dulay and Josh Poulter each taking two wickets they reduced the visitors to 80-9 in their allotted 20 overs.

As if that wasn’t enough, Compton had to play a second game straight after that victory, and any lingering doubts over fatigue were immediately hit for six. Due to match postponements, their match against Fair Oak B, was played immediately afterwards and like the first match,  Compton came out the victors again.  Matthew Haworth one again showed his class with an unbeaten 34* helping his side to victory, supported by brother Mike Haworth’s 7* and Jay Dulay’s unbeaten 14 as Compton finished on 93-1.  In reply Fair Oak B were restricted to 89-5 with Anash Crocker and Oran Creedon taking two wickets each.

In another pulsating game in the B Division, Otterbourne won a high-scoring game against by defeating Amport.   Eddie Culpitt’s 29 helped the Otterbourne post a mammoth total of 147-1.  The home side battled hard to reach the target but fell just short on 129-6 with Sam Goacher top scoring on 20 not out.    Elsewhere Easton and Martyr Worthy lost at home to Hursley Park by eight wickets after finishing on 87-6. The visitors reached their target of 88 with the loss of just two wickets.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15B2 League

An exciting encounter saw Sparsholt overcome St Cross B by eight wickets in a match where Oscar Birnie’s unbeaten 28 saw the visitors leave victorious.   St Cross B looked to have posted a match winning score of 109-2 with James Burgess and Ben Barber both hitting 18, Simon Culmer 26, and Felix Organ 25.  However, Sparsholt responded in admirable fashion with Birnie producing a player-of-the-match performance by taking two wickets to add to his batting, and they left the home side shocked.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15A League

IN A busy weekend for Southampton Community, which saw them play two matches in quick succession, they finished on a high after they were beaten by neighbours Hedge End.  A solid partnership between Joshua Stewart-Hill (25) and Jack White (24) for the home side set the Community 110 to win from their 20 overs.   However, some impressive bowling and fielding from Hedge End saw them dominate their visitors as James Doherty took 3 wickets in 4 overs and a great slip catch from Stewart-Hill.  Abdul Manjra top scored with 29 for the Community.

The Community travelled again to face Trojans and got their first victory on the board after winning by six wickets. The win leapfrogs them above their opponents in the table.

In one of the most exciting games of the game week, Hedge End, also playing their second game in a few days, lost to St Cross A by eight wickets with just seven balls to spare.

St Cross players produced some impressive batting performances from Joe Weatherley who top scored (30*) and was closely followed by Jack Stanley (27), Charlie Ayers (22), and Harry Foyle (21).    In reply, Hedge End were undone by a bowling and fielding masterclass as Harry Foyle and Richard Bolton both took two wickets from their four overs and Jack Middleton grabbed three stumpings as they reduced the away side to 136-8.  Jack White’s 35 not out and Tom Nicholl’s unbeaten 31 were not enough to deny St Cross the win, and preserve their unbeaten record.  Elsewhere, Andover continued their impressive form by beating Fair Oak by six wickets.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15B1 League

HURSLEY PARK’s good run of form continued as they took two victories this week to move top of the B1 division.   They overcome Otterbourne by four wickets after the home side set them a target of 85 to win, then they travelled to Fair Oak B and defeated them as well, after some impressive batting from Oliver Barnes.  Fair Oak B set them a target of 80 to win after posting a score of 79-9 from their 20 overs with Josh Ploughman top scoring with 27 not out.  However, in reply Barnes hit an unbeaten 30 to edge the visitors to victory, despite good bowling from Joe Theobald and Matt Perriam which couldn’t deny victory to Hursley Park.

Henry Slesser’s 25, and Luke Bourner’s 22, weren’t enough as Amport U15s lost to Compton and Chandlers Ford in a close encounter.  After posting a score of 108-5, the home side’s bowling let them down as Compton reached 109-1 with a minimum of fuss.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15B2 League

ROPLEY’S impressive start to the season continued after they beat an underachieving St Cross B by seven wickets.   Batting first, the visitors finished on 113-5 with Felix Organ hitting 30 runs to leave St Cross with a good score to defend. James Forrest had other ideas as he tried to be the nemesis for Ropley and took three wickets in four overs; he was an inspiration to his team-mates, who responded in excellent fashion.  Myles Greenwood’s 29, and Sam Packenham-Walsh’s 26, proved just enough for the home side as they finished on 117-3.

A dominant display from Sparsholt saw them overcome and inflict another defeat on sorry Trojans.  Ralph Mahood’s unbeaten 30, coincided with Oscar Birnie’s 318 to secure the win.

Birnie himself has been in fine form this season with the bat and ball, and his looking a great prospect for the future.  Mahood, Tom Wilkinson and Birnie himself all took two wickets apiece.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15A League

EXCEPTIONAL bowling and fielding performances ensured there was a low scoring game between Hedge End and Andover, which eventually saw the home side prevail.  Batting first, Hedge End were put under tremendous pressure as they looked to continue their good run of form with Rob Taylor taking four wickets for Andover in as many overs as they reduced the home side to 67 all out.   In reply Andover were all out for 55 after some excellent bowling from Tom Nicholls who continued his fine season with four wickets in just 3.5 overs. Ally Kenworthy and Richard Spiers took two wickets apiece as Hedge End won by 12 runs.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15B1 League

Chris Campbell’s 19 not out helped Easton and Martyr Worthy to a seven wicket win over Amport.  He was well supported by Matt Cooper’s four wickets in just 3.4 overs, plus two wickets from Callum Rigden who also finished with a brilliant low catch at mid-on to inflict another defeat on struggling Amport.

Marquis Motorhomes Under 15B2 League

Ropley under 15s won their second successive game of the month against Trojans to leave the home side with yet another defeat.  Sam Packenham-Walsh (30), Myles Greenwood (25), and James Forest (22) set them on their way to victory as they dominated the home side to win by an impressive margin of ten wickets.

The Under 15s County Cup

TICHBORNE PARK went through to the next round of the County Cup after beating Fair Oak Under 15 A by 94 runs.  Aidon Pond (41) and Ross Green (50) set them on their way to victory after posting an imposing 178-5.  In reply, the visitors were all out for 84 with Nakhil Chikhiwala taking three wickets for the home side as Friday 13th proved to be bad luck day for Fair Oak.  Elsewhere St Cross U15A beat Hedge End by 53 runs with Luke Ingram taking three wickets for the Winchester side.

20th June :  Oliver, Barfoot and Millard Cup

1st Round Previews

ONE OF the most eagerly awaited junior cricket competitions of the summer gets underway this coming weekend (24-26 June) as the Winchester Warriors knockout competitions are set to defy the weather.   As we approach midsummer’s day, the under 11s, participate in the Oliver Cup and Plate, the under 13s have the Barfoot Cup and Plate, and the under 15s compete for the Millard Cup and Millard Plate.

The Under 11 Oliver Cup and Oliver Plate

Division A League leaders St Cross A will travel to 3rd placed Hedge End in the First Round of the Cup which sees the first of two mouth-watering matches taking place.   St Cross boast a 100% start to the season with two wins from as many matches, but their opponents themselves have had a very healthy start to the season with just one defeat in five matches.

The second key clash of the weekend will see Compton and Chandlers Ford entertain Andover A as it sees 2nd vs. 4th face off, with the home side having the advantage of higher league ranking going into the fixture.   In the other Division A games, St Cross B welcome Trojans A and bottom of the league Sparsholt entertain Hursley Park.

Elsewhere, Fair Oak A will host Southampton Community, Easton and Martyr Worthy A are at home to Hedge End B, Longparish travel to Andover B, and Amport visit IBM Hursley.  Twyford will play Wherwell, Ropley play Otterbourne,  St Cross C are at home to Sparsholt B, and Trojans entertain Easton and Martyr Worthy B.

The Under 13 Barfoot Cup and Barfoot Plate

One of the most anticipated matches of the under 13 category will see Andover A challenge Fair Oak A, who are both in the top 3 of the Under 13 A Division.

Southampton Community will have their work cut out as they travel to St Cross A, where it will see bottom vs. top.  Lowly St Cross B will be keen to surprise Trojans A, whilst the other all-division A tie sees Hursley Park against Sparsholt A.

Division B2 side Ropley, will want to keep their 100% record as they travel to play St Cross C.   B2 side Otterbourne play away to IBM Hursley of the A division in one of just two matches that see lower league sides play higher ranked sides; the other sees Otterbourne play Compton and Chandlers Ford.

Elsewhere Amport A welcome Easton and Martyr Worthy, Longparish entertain Fair Oak B, Andover B travel to Hedge End, and Sparsholt B play at Tichborne Park.   Fair Oak C are at home to Trojans B and Twyford visit Wherwell, who are bottom of the B2 Division, having squeezed just two matches this season, amongst the showers.

Under 15 Millard Cup

Round One of the Millard Cup will see two all Division B2 clashes starting with the match between St Cross B and Tichborne Park. The visitors will be looking to keep their 100% record which has seen them win four out of four and sit proudly on top of the league.

Elsewhere Ropley entertain Sparsholt where it sees 2nd vs. 3rd.

Unlike most tournaments the losing teams in the first round of all three Cup competitions are then entered in the Plate competitions.  These provide a fresh opportunity for teams to progress towards the Cup and Plate Finals which take place in the last week of July.
