The Cup Final reports

Millard Cup Final

St Cross grab victory from the jaws of defeat

Nerves helped St Cross under 15s win their cup clash with friendly rivals Andover as they met again for the 2011 Millard Cup Final writes Harry Hunt.  Andover were odds-on favourites with 12 runs to win from 24 balls, however a calamity final few overs saw St Cross crowned victorious.

St Cross won the toss and decided to bat, but lost their first wicket with just 3 on the board.  Solid knocks from Joe Wetherley (18) and Charlie Ayres (19) lifted them to 52-2 after 10 over’s.  Captain Harry Foyle (19) and Jack Middleton (10) continued the good work, but mostly tight bowling and good fielding by the Andover squad restricted all the St Cross batters as they were made to work hard to reach a respectable 96 for 6.

Max Souter (2-24) and Rowan Duckworth (2-15) were the pick of the Andover bowlers, whilst Trebear, Souter and Duckworth all took excellent catches to peg back St Cross.

Foyle and Ayres opened the bowling for St Cross and each dismissed an Andover opener for a duck.  Controlled aggression with the bat from Max Romer-Lee (33) and Max Souter (28) took Andover to 53 – 2 at the half way stage.

Tight bowling from spinners and pace-men, backed with positive and reliable fielding held Andover in-check, but more positive batting took them to 85 for 5 with four over’s to go.  Someone in the enthusiastic crowd said it’s easy from here.  But they weren’t out in the middle.

With 5 wickets left, 12 were needed from 4 over’s, and that became 8 off 3.  But then Harry Foyle sent Randall and Morton back to the pavilion, and Ben Hughes took another wicket.  R Taylor was run out, trying for a second run after a miss-field which made it 90 for 9 with two over’s to go.

7 were needed from 10 balls as Ben Hughes came steaming in.   J McMahon was unlucky enough to lift it straight into the hands of the grateful Joe Wetherley as all his St Cross team mates piled in.   Disappointment was written on the faces of the Andover players, as they had controlled nearly all the match but lost it in the last few over’s.

Congratulating the winners and the runners-up, Winchester Warriors Chairman Tim Milligan awarded the player of the match award to Andover’s Max Romer-Lee.

Millard Plate Final

Fair Oak Too Stern For Sparsholt

Drizzle threatened to put a dampener on the spirits at Sparsholt, but Fair Oak shone through to take the 2011 Millard Plate writes Harry Hunt. Setting off to an explosive start, the Oak openers Craig Buttle and Charlie Gwynn put together a strong partnership of 34 off the first 3 over’s. The first wicket stand of 38 did come to a halt though; Daniel Hemmingway held a good catch to take Buttle for 22. Gwynn (13) then shortly followed before Sparsholt’s Tom Wilkinson took Louis Froome for a duck in an important double wicket maiden.

Off spinner Ralph Mahood picked up his first wicket of the evening with a great ball clipping Matt Hunt’s off stump, reducing Fair Oak to a respectable 71-4 after 10 over’s. This allowed Oak’s Tom Tuckey to take the reins; his regular boundaries propelled the batting side to 100 runs in the 15th over. Tuckey then produced two big sixes and retired on 50 not out in the final over of their innings. 148-6 was the bench mark set for Sparsholt as Fair Oak looked to take their batting momentum into the field.

This was exactly the case as Mark Richards took the first for Fair Oak, before striking the very next ball as Hemmingway returned for a golden duck. Ralph Mahood came in to steady the ship and instantly made an impact, his 6 took Sparsholt to 24-2. Foy (4) was then taken leg before wicket for Richard’s third scalp, and team mate Will Selly (2) was stumped in a running mishap. Mahood fell for 20 as Sparsholt were left floundering on 48-5, while a few balls later Nick Richards tore Jordan Glasspool’s stump out of the ground for his only wicket of the evening.

Tom Wilkinson and Chris Harwood looked on form as they hit boundary after boundary as Sparsholt’s tail began to wag. With 50 required from just 4 over’s, the odds were stacked against the batsmen who ultimately couldn’t chase down the Fair Oak total. However an incredible 7th wicket partnership of 80 runs between Wilkinson (18 n/o) and Harwood (40 n/o) meant Sparsholt narrowly missed out on victory as they fell just 18 runs short.

Tom Tuckey deservedly won the player of the match award as Fair Oak gladly lifted the Millard Plate at Sparsholt’s Norman Edward’s Cricket Ground.

Oliver Cup and Plate Finals Round-up

Both the Oliver Cup and Oliver Plate under 11 competitions drew to a close last weekend, St Cross (cup) and Andover (plate) were victorious.

Oliver Cup

Travelling to Twyford on Sunday morning, Easton won the toss and elected to bat on a fairly damp wicket and outfield, writes Harry Hunt. This decision proved costly following the loss of their first wicket in the opening over, courtesy of an in-form Jacob Fay. The impressive St Cross youngster took two more scalps in his second over, reducing the batting side to a mere 9-3 early on.  A further two wickets fell after five over’s and Easton were left nervously wobbling on just 14 runs. However, a good effort from the middle and late order dug in to spare their sides blushes. A last wicket stand of 20 runs ensured St Cross A would have to overcome a total of 71 to take home the trophy. No Easton batsmen managed to reach double figures in their innings, although Gabriel Jordan and Marcus Redpath notched 9 runs each to set up an interesting finale.

Much like the first innings, St Cross were first out the blocks and found themselves on 42 runs after openers Nathan Birks (21) and Alex Ayres (13) put the Symondians firmly in the driving seat. The winning run came in the 16th over with St Cross comfortably winning by 8 wickets. Player of the match went to Jacob Fay who took 4 wickets for 15 runs.

Oliver Plate

Wherwell played host for the under 11 plate final, where eventual winners Andover A overcame Otterbourne by an impressive 9 wickets. Winning the toss, Andover put the opposition into bat and limited their scoring to 62-4 from the allotted over’s. Andover fielded well but couldn’t manage to take the scalp of Matt Driver who finished not out with 26. Rahul Patel stood out for the bowling side, taking 2 for just 13 runs.

Andover replied positively losing just one wicket as Patel and partner Ollie Cox steered their side home to an easy 9 wicket triumph. With a partnership of 49 runs, Patel’s 30 not out added to his bowling figures to rightly earn him the man of the match award.

Barfoot Cup Round one and Under 13 Leagues

It’s the one date that most clubs look forward to at the start of the season, and the weekend didn’t disappoint, with some exciting cricket played in the first round of the Barfoot Cup.   All matches played were also league matches.

The Marquis Motorhomes   Under 13A League

Barfoot Cup Round One

ONE of the shocks of the competition so far took place when Trojans A upset visitors St Cross B, to post their first victory of the season.   Languishing just above bottom place in the league and a second round match at stake, Trojans didn’t let that affect them and reduced St Cross B to 50 all out. Dhruv Gor’s 5-10 in four overs was a particular highlight and was helped by Aykam Grewel’s 3-17.

In one of the most eagerly matches of the weekend saw Andover A come up against Fair Oak A. Both teams are going strong in the league with them sitting 3rd and 2nd respectively and it was the home side who prevailed on this occasion. Fair Oak who batted first reached 91-6 in their 20 overs with Ben Cox 29not out.   In reply George McKenzie’s 31not out proved enough for Andover as they hit a six off the last ball to finish on 95-4.

Southampton Community’s dismal season continued as they were comprehensively beaten by league leaders and cup favourites St Cross A.   St Cross batted first and posted a very healthy score of 147-8 but in reply Community were blown away by some fantastic bowling and ended up 31 all out in a game they will want to forget.    The defeat means Southampton Community now have to face St Cross B in the Plate competition whilst St Cross will play Trojans A.

Elsewhere Hursley Park, 115-4, defeated Sparsholt A, 105-3, by 10 runs.

The Marquis Motorhomes   Under 13B1 League

Barfoot Cup Round One

Outstanding batting performances from Dean Griffin, 31not out, and Ethan Brackstone, 33not out, saw Easton and Martyr Worthy overcome the challenge of Amport to progress to the second round of the competition.  Amport batted first and posted a score of 134-8 which would be enough to win most games.   George Sutcliffe (30*) and Ollie Owen (20) helped them to a highly credible score but Easton and Martyr Worthy proved too strong and finished on 138-1 after 19.3 overs.

Otterbourne A edged an exciting match between fellow B1 challengers Andover B. The visitors who were sitting top of the league before the day’s play lost their unbeaten start to the season thanks largely in part to Dominic Saville. His match-winning performance did not go unnoticed as his bowling and batting heroics proved to be the away side’s downfall.

Otterbourne A were put into bat and posted a strong score of 138-1 with Saville not out on 30 alongside Ollie Beresford.  In reply Andover B ensured it was a nail biting finish but came up just short on 133-7 with Archie Cripwell 32not out and Ollie Dykes 33not out.  However it was Saville who was man of the match as his 3-23 capped a wonderful match for the youngster.

Elsewhere Fair Oak B defeated Longparish in a close match which saw the visitors reach their victory target in 15.5 overs. Longparish made 80-6 before Fair Oak reached their target of 81 for the loss of just two wickets.    The match between Hedge End and Andover B ended in a walkover for the home side.

The Marquis Motorhomes   Under 13B2 League

Barfoot Cup Round One

Trojans B followed in the footsteps of their A side by upsetting their visitors Fair Oak C to win by two wickets. In a low scoring affair Harry Tuckey was the man of the match as his 11 runs helped the home side to reach 56-8 before two run outs reduced Fair Oak C to 55-7.

Elsewhere Sparsholt B, 120-4, beat Tichborne Park, 115-6, by five wickets and Twyford, 125-5, demolished bottom side Wherwell, 52-1, by 73 runs.

The winners of each game go forward to round two of the competition, whilst the losers advance to the Barfoot Plate. All fixtures to be played this coming weekend 3rd / 4th July.

Cup Finals produce great performers

Ropley Under 13s were victorious in their Barfoot Cup Final tie with St Cross Symondians.  Winning the toss and batting first, St Cross were expected to compile a formidable score.  But they were 4 regulars short, and with Will Bentley top scoring on 12, they could only manage 67 all out in 16 of the 20 overs.

High quality bowling and good fielding by Ropley made it difficult for the batsmen.  Will Packenham-Walsh was the star bowler with 4-6 in three overs, whilst his brother Jamie took 2-8 (4 overs) and Will Stennett had 2-19 in 4 overs.

When Ropley batted they found it no easier, as St Cross bowled and fielded superbly.  Simon Culmer (2-6), Jonnie Wahid (2-16) and James Thompson (2-16) were the pick of the St Cross bowlers.

Ropley were 21-4 after 8 overs, and 49 for 6 by the 13th over, but a solid performance from Jamie Packenham-Walsh (23 not out) made sure that Ropley edged past the target with just 14 balls to spare.

Jamie Packenham-Walsh’s batting and bowling combined to earn him the Player of the Match award which was presented by the Winchester Warriors President Jeff Levick on a delightful sunny morning, as he congratulated all the players on their skill and excellent team spirit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the Barfoot Plate Final, played at the beautiful Longparish ground, Fair Oak Under 13s compiled a formidable 133 for 6 in their 20 overs.  Charlie Gwynn and Henry Phillips both made 30 not out and they worked together superbly well until they had to retire.

Gregor McKenzie made a quick fire 11 off 9 balls, and Connor Jack made a speedy 13 at the end of the Fair Oak innings.  Excellent running between the wickets helped push the score along, turning 1s into 2s and 2s into 3s.

The Tichborne opening bowlers, Christian Bottomley (3-22) and Aiden Blackman (2-20) were well supported by the change bowlers and the fielders, and were delighted to see a superb catch by Tom Walton in the deep, which had been middled with power by Andy Slowgrove.

When Tichborne batted, Tom Norsworthy (14), Aiden Blackman (17), and Christian Bottomley (15*) were the top scorers.  As the later batters tried for quick runs, they were pegged back by 3 run outs.

Tichborne were restricted by Fair Oak’s tight bowling and ground fielding.  The wickets were shared between Tom Watson (2-9), Harry Salmon (1-4) and Connor Jack, Connor Potter and Matt Williams who grabbed a wicket apiece.

For Tichborne, Christian Bottomley batted, bowled and fielded superbly.  But Fair Oak’s Henry Phillips was the Player of the Match and received the Winchester Warriors award for his 30 not out.
